Research Assistant II

Summary:

The research in the Tian lab focuses on the role of epigenetic instability in the aging process. The lab aims to understand how the epigenetic landscape is set up and maintained and why the maintenance system fails which contributes to aging and leads to age-related diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. The Research Assistant will be working directly with the PI and other researchers in the lab and will be involved in projects related to epigenetic aging and rejuvenation. The Research Assistant contributes to the completion of projects by performing a variety of experimental procedures and tests, processing samples, collecting data, and setting up and operating equipment. The Research Assistant is also responsible for daily maintenance activities within the lab, including maintaining equipment and reagents and ordering laboratory supplies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform cell culture and molecular experiments related to epigenetics and neuroscience
  • Perform animal-related work including inventory, mouse genotyping, and behavioral assays
  • Test new assays and establish protocols
  • Keeps detailed written records of experiments and data organization
  • Troubleshoots problems and develops solutions to technical problems of moderate to high scope using independent thinking, literature, and colleagues as resources to solve problems
  • Provides interpretation and analysis of results
  • Maintains various reagent collections (antibodies, plasmids, enzymes, buffers) and inventories
  • Orders lab supplies as needed
  • Follow all appropriate safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment. Ensure that safe work practices according to EH&S guidelines are followed by lab members, including handling of chemicals and biohazardous materials.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the biological science or related studies OR equivalent education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been attained is required.
  • Level I: Prior lab experience preferred.
  • Level II: At least one year of experience is required. Additional experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with mouse models is preferred.

Compensation:

The expected compensation is $16.85-$24.00/hour for level I and $24.00-28.00/hour for level II commensurate with experience.
